Food and Children's Environmental Health

Our digestive system breaks apart everything we eat and drink for use in the everyday functioning of our bodies.  While naturally occurring nutrients can be totally metabolized and excreted as part of our normal physiology, we also take in many pesticides and chemicals that we do not have the capacity to digest and use.  These compounds stay in our body  and can have many harmful effects on our health.  Since the threshold for harmful levels of these compounds is much lower in children, it is especially important to eliminate these toxins from our children's foods, and to work for laws that consider children's health and safety.

Our food supply contains many chemicals that have been added, intentionally or unintentionally, during production, handling, storage or processing.  Residue from pesticides used in growing fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains contaminates these foods.  Dairy, meat, seafood, and processed foods are contaminated with industrial chemicals, additives, hormones, growth stimulants, antibiotics, and other animal drugs.  PCBs and other toxins have traveled into and up the food chain and now are in a wide variety of common foods.
