Clearing Up the Act of Cleaning Up

It is common sense, of course, to realize that a lot of products in our homes are toxic and need to be kept out of the reach of the kids. Cleaning products are a prime example of this.

But in the larger scheme of things, simply taking household toxins out of your children’s reach isn’t enough. The chemicals we run down our drains, pour into our yards or throw in the garbage don’t just disappear. They go somewhere. The cleaning products and other chemicals from your home may very well end up back on your doorstep.

But potentially hazardous cleaning products with possible toxicity are just a fact of life, aren’t they? We couldn’t really get our houses germ-free and healthy without them, right?

Not necessarily. As with pesticides, cleaning products with chemicals can be useful when used judiciously. They can serve a good purpose. But we’ve come to rely on them too much and overuse them.  By learning about less-toxic or non-toxic ways to clean, we can reduce our reliance on chemical options. By doing so, we do the environment a favor, and we do our families a favor at the same time.
