SOS Campaign Issue: Pesticide Reduction When Generation Green or any other organization brings up the topic of pesticide residues and risks to children, the most obvious thing to think of is the overuse of pesticides in agriculture. What is far less obvious are the risks pesticides can pose for kids in school. Yet the school environment does present kids with pesticide exposure. Pesticides might be used outdoors on plants and around buildings to protect groundskeeping or keep out pests, for example. But pesticide are also used indoors, often in cafeterias and food preparation areas. The reason is obvious: Those are places were insects and other pests might be drawn to. But this also means that pesticides can find their way onto the food itself, or onto the hands of kid's before they begin putting food into their mouths. That's why Generation Green, the OCA and other groups with which we work prefer to see integrated pest management (IPM) programs that reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. >> What Is IPM and Why Is It Important?
