Generic Viagra is a medication used to treat sexual disorders in men. This generic is prescribed to restore a normal sexual reaction and establish an erection mechanism in men.
How does the drug work?
The tablets contain sildenafil. This is the main active substance that helps increase sexual desire, strengthen sexual functions, and therefore increase sexual capabilities in general. The drug gives the ability to lead a full and healthy sex life.
Sildenafil has a local effect on phosphodiesterase (type 5), which is directly responsible for the process of cleavage of cyclic guanosine monophosphate in the cavernous body of the penis. The substance also improves blood circulation in the genital area and relaxes the smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa.
Indications for use
Generic Viagra is a drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction of organic, psychogenic or mixed origin.
Dosage and mode of application
The drug is taken orally and washed down with a sufficient amount of water. The recommended dose in the vast majority of cases is 50 mg (half of the tablet). If the effect in this case is insufficient – the daily dose can be increased to 100 mg, or vice versa, if the effect is too pronounced and there are side effects – the dose can be reduced to 25 mg (a quarter of the tablet).
Dosage for impaired renal function: Light and medium form do not require correction of sildenafil dosage. In acute and chronic forms of renal failure (creatinine concentration of less than 30 ml/min), the use of sildenafil has not been studied.
Dosage for impaired liver function: In case of impaired liver function, including cirrhosis, the dosage should be reduced to 25 mg (a quarter of a tablet). And since the half-life of sildenafil in case of impaired liver function is significantly increased, Viagra can be used no more often than once every 48 hours.
Overdose
Experiments show that an increase in a dosage exceeding the maximum therapeutic dose increases the risk of side effects. In this situation, symptomatic therapy should be used as a treatment. In this case, hemodialysis has no effect, because sildenafil actively binds to its proteins after entering the bloodstream.
Compatibility with alcohol
The combined use of sildenafil with alcohol is not recommended. Patients who take alcohol together with Viagra significantly increase the likelihood of side effects in the form of a headache. Alcohol also affects the speed and strength of Viagra’s action, significantly delaying the onset of the effect. Studies of sildenafil at a dose of 50 mg did not confirm that the latter increases the hypertensive or hypotensive effect of alcohol in male volunteers and all indicators were within the arithmetic error.
Side effects
Generic Viagra is usually well tolerated. In rare cases, standard side effects were recorded, which were minor and temporary:
- central nervous system: skeletal muscle spasm and increased tone, insomnia, dizziness;
- cardiovascular system: headache, fever in the face; from the musculoskeletal system (pain in the muscles and joints);
- gastrointestinal tract (dyspepsia, diarrhea, nausea); on the part of the skin (rash, itching);
- organs of perception of the surrounding world (violation of the clarity of vision, a change in color perception, nasal congestion).
- reproductive function: priapism.
Contraindications
Contraindications for taking Viagra are individual intolerance to sildenafil and hypersensitivity to any other components of the drug. Also, the use of this drug should be avoided in the following cases:
- bleeding disorder;
- exacerbation of a duodenal ulcer and a stomach ulcer;
- severe renal and hepatic insufficiency;
- blood-forming diseases (myeloma, sickle cell anemia, leukemia);
- severe forms of hypertension or hypotension, unstable angina, dangerous forms of arrhythmia and cardiac safety;
- a predisposition to priapism and men who have congenital curvature of the penis and fibrosis;
- recent (up to 6 months) stroke or myocardial infarction;
- women and children under 18 years of age due to lack of information on clinical trials;
- the simultaneous administration of nitrates and nitrogen donors is strictly forbidden due to the risk of an instant pressure decrease;
- pregnancy.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Sildenafil tablets are not intended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women, however, no abnormalities in fetal formation were observed in rats and rabbits.
Interaction with other medicines
The simultaneous use of cimetidine, erythromycin and ketoconazole can cause a decrease in clearance, as well as an increase in the area under the concentration curve. The simultaneous use of hypoglycemic drugs, beta-blockers and BMCC is also considered unsafe. Another very dangerous combination is the combined use of Viagra with nitrogen donors and other nitrates, due to a possible sharp decrease in blood pressure.
